Iraq says Islamic state militants 'Bulldozed' ancient site

Islamic State militants "bulldozed" the renowned archaeological site of the ancient city of Nimrud in northern Iraq on Thursday using heavy military vehicles, the government said.

A statement from Iraq's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities didn't elaborate on the extent of the damage, saying only that the group continues to "defy the will of the world and the feelings of humanity" with this latest act, which came after an attack on the Mosul museum just days earlier.

The destruction of the site of one of ancient Mesopotamia's greatest cities recalled the Taliban's annihilation of large Buddha statues in Afghanistan more than a dozen years ago, experts said.

Nimrud was the second capital of Assyria, an ancient kingdom that began in about 900 B.C., partially in present-day Iraq, and became a great regional power. The city, which was destroyed in 612 B.C., is located on the Tigris River just south of Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, which was captured by the Islamic State group in June.
The late 1980s discovery of treasures in Nimrud's royal tombs was one of the 20th century's most significant archaeological finds. After Iraq was invaded in 2003, archaeologists were relieved when they were found hidden in the country's central Bank — in a secret vault-inside-a-vault submerged in sewage water.
The Islamic State extremists have attacked other archaeological and religious sites, claiming that they promote apostasy. Earlier this week, a video emerged on militant websites showing Islamic State militants with sledgehammers destroying ancient artefacts at the Mosul museum, sparking global outrage.
Last year, the militants destroyed the Mosque of the Prophet Younis and the Mosque of the Prophet Jirjis, two revered ancient shrines in Mosul. They also threatened to destroy Mosul's 850-year old Crooked Minaret, but residents surrounded the structure, preventing the militants from approaching.
Suzanne Bott, the heritage conservation project director for Iraq and Afghanistan in the University of Arizona's College of Architecture, Planning and Archaeology, worked at Nimrud on and off for two years between 2008 and 2010. She helped stabilize structures and survey Nimrud for the U.S. State Department as part of a joint U.S. military and civilian unit.
She described Nimrud as one of four main Assyrian capital cities that practiced medicine, astrology, agriculture, trade and commerce, and had some of the earliest writings.
"It's really called the cradle of Western civilization, that's why this particular loss is so devastating," Bott said. "What was left on site was stunning in the information it was able to convey about ancient life.
"People have compared it to King Tut's tomb," she said.
Iraq's national museum in Baghdad opened its doors to the public last week for the first time in 12 years in a move Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said was to defy efforts "to destroy the heritage of mankind and Iraq's civilization."
The Islamic State group has imposed a harsh and violent version of Islamic law in the territories it controls and has terrorized religious minorities. It has released gruesome videos online showing the beheading of captives, including captured Western journalists and aid workers.

Jack Green, chief curator of the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago and expert on Iraqi art, said Thursday that the IS group seems bent on destroying objects they view as idols representing religions and cultures that don't conform to their beliefs.

"It's the deliberate destruction of a heritage and its images, intended to erase history and the identity of the people of Iraq, whether in the past or the present," Green said. "And it has a major impact on the heritage of the region."Green noted that in many of these attacks on art, pieces that can be carried away are then sold to fund the IS group, while the larger artifacts and sculptures are destroyed at the site.

India’s Daughter, the act of documentary, and the obsession with true crime

Indian government officials banned “India’s Daughter,” a BBC documentary about the Delhi gang rape of 2012, from broadcast in India this week, citing a danger to women’s safety. But it still circulated on YouTube inside and outside the country after the ban, until Google complied with the government’s requests and blocked copies of the film on the video-sharing site in India.

Now the BBC has launched a much more severe, global ban—the broadcaster has asked Google to remove all copies of the documentary, viewable anywhere in the world, from YouTube, citing copyright infringement. Just as dozens of blogs and mainstream media outlets were trumpeting the ability of the internet, and international media, to circumvent the Indian government’s controversial ban, the film is no longer available online.

To view the documentary outside of the UK, you’ll need to use a private VPN or create a fake IP address in the UK.

“When a copyright holder notifies us of a video that infringes their copyright we remove the content promptly in accordance of the law,” Google told Quartz, explaining why the video has been removed from YouTube. The BBC’s press office didn’t respond to e-mailed requests for comment.

Leslee Udwin and the team behind the documentary India’s Daughter had interviewed Delhi’s Tihar jail inmate Mukesh Singh. Was Singh, one of the six men convicted for gang-raping a young woman in Delhi in 2012, trying to make a case that his death sentence should be dropped, especially since he insists on camera that he only drove the vehicle and didn’t participate in the ghastly attack that eventually claimed the life of the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern?

Since India’s Daughter doesn’t attempt to crawl inside Singh’s head to understand him better, he remains transparent. The rare access to Singh that was granted by the Tihar prison authority’s lays bare his rancid views on women in general and the victim in particular. His thoughts are distressing enough to box the film. As such the information and broadcasting ministry has debarred television networks from broadcasting the documentary in any form.

The ministry feels that the “telecast of these excerpts appear to compromise the role of the media as the upholder of constitutional values as the fourth pillar of our democracy.”
The ministry has been pilloried for the ban, and its decision will be discussed across the globe.

A new, and potentially profitable, narrative has been built around the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) co-production: India’s Daughter is now the documentary that the Indian government doesn’t want the world to see. NDTV24x7, which has seen a potential hit slip out of its hands in a matter of days, has been screaming itself hoarse in protest.  As such on March 8th, which is observed as Women’s Day NDTV24x7 had aired an image titled India’s daughter as a form of protest against the government in spite of incurring huge amount of revenue loss?

India’s Daughter has been billed as no mere documentary, but that rare thing in the world of non-fiction film: an event. It was to have been broadcast simultaneously in several countries on International Women’s Day, but the BBC took advantage of the uproar in India to advance the screening in the UK to March 4. According to the Guardian, a red-carpet screening has been planned in New York on March 9, to be graced by the likes of actresses Meryl Streep and Freida Pinto. This will mark the launch of a worldwide campaign for gender equality with the same title as the film.

India’s Daughter does not replicate the strategy adopted by the Act of KillingInstead, it assembles information and stories that have circulated in the national media ever since the crime. There are also interviews with women’s rights activist and former judges, as well as two damning conversations with the rapists’ defence lawyers not heard. All of these have been depicted before, but gain greater force since they have been strung together in one piece.

The best judge of what India’s Daughter achieves should be its intended television audience.

India’s Daughter might reinforce public opinion that Singh and his cohorts are monsters, but it also emphasises his ordinariness. The film is titled India’s Daughter, but it is also about one of India’s sons.

The next RICKY or the first STEVE

Ricky Thomas Ponting, or known by his fans and followers as “PUNTER” is definitely one of the cricketing greats seen by the cricketing world. The young Tasmanian boy made his debut in the year 1995 under the Australian Cricket Team led by Mark Taylor and showed glimpses of brilliance as he was settling his nerves. Some seemed impressed by the talented young boy but it wasn’t until late 1999 when Steve Waugh let Australia to a historic 2nd World Cup win that ushered the GOLDEN ERA for Australian Cricket.

Aussies became the invincible following the 99 world cup win and soon after Steve Waugh’s retirement in 2003, Ricky Ponting took charge and there was no looking back. Punter not only build up a team of the all stars with Binga(Brett Lee) and Pidge (Glenn McGrath) along with Bracks(Nathan Bracken) and Dizzy(Jason Gillespie) leading the pace attack followed by the wizard Shane Warne dominating the spin department along with Brad Hogg and Stuart MacGill.

In the batting department he had Churchy (Adam Gilchrist) and Haydos (Mathew Hayden) the 2 most feared openers in cricketing history followed by Punter himself along with Michael Bevan who later got replaced by Mr. Cricket himself Mike Hussey after Bevan’s retirement. Punter also made way for a young PUP (Michael Clarke) who would later go on to be Punter’s successor. He had backup in the form of Roy (Andrew Symonds), BJ (Brad Haddin) and Watto (Shane Watson) in the middle and lower order.

Punter found success in every quest put ahead of him, he not only won series after series but went on to create records after records. The entire team was on high spirits as Punter went on to win the 2003 Cricket World Cup as the captain marking Australia’s 3rd World Cup win followed by the 2007 Cricket World Cup marking Australia’s 4th World Cup win and becoming the first captain in Australian History to win 2 World Cups. Australia continued their success with the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy win and Their glory days seemed far from over until the 2011 World Cup which marked Ricky Ponting’s final World Cup and he retired failing to qualify for the semi finals.

Pup( Michael Clarke) took over the captaincy from Punter and so far has had a good mix of win is to loss ratio. He has silenced his critics when needed and has delivered big time for the Aussies. He has been so far the right appointment as Punter’s successor.

Pup got the Aussies the Ashes back from England recently with the help of players like Llyod (Dave Warner) and Notch ( Mitchell Johnson) and also had a successful series against the proteas (South Africa) which helped Aussies reclaim their number 1 spot in the ICC test rankings. PUP has been the architect and has build himself the next generation of Australian greats and out of them the gem which has the whole cricketing world buzzing is STEVE SMITH who is also known as Smudge.

Smudge came into the Australian squad as a replacement for Shane Warne as a right arm leg break bowler who could bowl that googly right into the ruff patch. He came in under Punter’s captaincy and showed brilliance with the bowl and his athletic fielding. It wasn’t until IPL where Smith played for the franchise Pune Warriors under Sourav Ganguly and he instantly turned into a batsman. He came to bat at number 4 for Pune Warriors and became a match winner at several occasions and could handle pressure at ease. This soon repositioned Smudge in the Aussie national team and he got promoted up the batting order.

His real test came recently in 2014-15 series against the World Champions India where is shocked the world with his tremendous run of form. With Captain Michael Clarke injured, Smudge led Australia to win the test on his debut as a skipper in the second test at Gabba.

He became more of a run scoring machine smashing records becoming the 6th Australian to reach his maiden test 100 with a six, During the 4th Test against India in Sydney, Smith joined Don Bradman (6), Neil Harvey, Jack Fingleton and Matthew Hayden (4 each) as Australian centurions in four or more consecutive Tests, a streak Smith started during the 1st Test at Adelaide.

Smith also became the first Australian skipper to open their captaincy with three consecutive centuries, and the second batsman since Jacques Kallis against West Indies to score a century in every match of a Test series. During the 2014–15 Border Gavaskar Trophy Test Series against India, Smith set a record for the most runs (769) scored by an individual in a series against India, surpassing the previous record held by Don Bradman. Smith also went on to play a major role in the tri series following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which had teams like India, Australia and England. He scored a century just in time to secure a place for Australia in the finals of the tournament beating England and becoming a match hero and successfully capturing the tri series by defeating England again in the finals as a skipper.

In the ICC Cricket World Cup being played in Australia, Smith has been impressive playing his 2nd World Cup scoring blistering knocks of 72 and 95 so far and taking one of the best catches of the tournament. If Australia manage to win the 2015 World Cup then it could usher in a new era for both the Australian Cricket Team and Steven Smith.

If Steven Smith continues in the form like he is in, he might have a spot already booked for him in the all time cricketing greats. Being compared with Sir Don Bradman, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting so early in his career, Steve Smith definitely has the class to back it up. As hyped, he might end up his career being the all time Australian great.

The new rivalry MSN versus BBC

It has been no secret to the footballing world about the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid which is termed as the EL CLASICO and this is considered the most exclusive fixture of Spain’s first division football league known as LA LIGA. This rivalry is something which separates Spain in 2 halves, The Catalonians (Barcelona) and The Los Blancos (Real Madrid) and has perhaps been the only reason which held Spain back from success until 2008 when they decided to hold on their alter ego for EL CLASICO and play as a team for the nation and they had their glory years till 2014. But this didn’t lessen the heat between the two teams as the rivalry has only got more intense with each passing year.

Both the teams are famous and renowned by the whole world having fans in every corner of the globe. There has been a lot of big names in football who have got the opportunity to play for these two amazing sides and the rivalry has always got interesting  with the battles between ZIDANE (Real Madrid) vs RONALDINHO (Barcelona) to the modern day when the names have changed to RONALDO (Real Madrid) vs MESSI (Barcelona).

When one hoped that things couldn’t get any more spicier for the EL CLASICO, both Barcelona and Real Madrid decided to take it to the next level with the purchase of NEYMAR (Barcelona) and BALE (Real Madrid) who are labeled to be successors of MESSI and RONALDO to keep the El Clasico interesting once the two talisman retire. Things got even better when Barcelona purchased SUAREZ which made BENZEMA get his form back out of nowhere for REAL MADRID and hence commenced the inception of BBC and MSN.

BBC which stands for the Real Madrid’s destructive attacking trio namely Gareth (B)ale, Karim (B)enzema and (C)ristiano Ronaldo made their presence felt rightaway in the LA LIGA season 2013-14. The trio not only outshadowed other teams in Spain but also in the European competition. They couldn’t have asked for better mentors than Carlo Ancelloti and Zindine Zidane under whom the trio set new records to break and humiliated opponents increasing their goal scoring tally.

Their Stats from the entire season of 2013-14 has been Bale with 22 Goals [15 League, 6 UEFA Champions League, 1 Copa Del Ray]; Ronaldo with 51 Goals [31 League, 17 UEFA Champions League, 3 Copa Del Ray] and Benzema with 24 Goals[17 League, 5 UEFA Champions League, 2 Copa Del Ray]. In total the trio, BBC scored 97 goals in the calendar year which say RONALDO winning the Balon D’or and other personal accolades with the team Real Madrid winning the COPA DEL RAY and the UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
They even extended their sensational form and helped Real Madrid reach an undefeated streak of 23 games in the current season which set a record on its own unmatched by any other team. Real Madrid also went on to win the FIFA Club World Cup and the EUROPEAN Super Cup and currently are favorites to win the UEFA Champions League again. The Trio has 77 goals so far this 2014-15 season which reads Bale having 16 goals [12 League, 2  UEFA Champions League, 2 Others]; Benzema with 20 goals[13 League, 6 UEFA Champions League, 1 Others] and Ronaldo  having 41 goals[30 League, 8 UEFA Champions League, 1 Copa Del Ray, 2 Others].

MSN stands for the Bacelona’s top new found attacking force in the form of Lionel (M)essi, Luis (S)uarez and (N)eymar Dos Santos Jr. MSN arrived late unlike BBC who started to dominate right from their formation. MSN required to get their chemistry right as the three attackers have a very different kind of gameplay.

It took them more than half of the season to get it right but now since they have done it there is no looking back. They have taken everyone else by storm this season along with their competition BBC with reclaiming the top spot for Barcelona in the LA LIGA, being the favorites to win COPA DEL RAY and also holding a comfortable spot in the UEFA Champions league. Their performances have improved both individually and personally and it can be reflected in their statistics. Messi having 43 goals[ 32 League, 8 UEFA Champions League, 3 Copa Del Ray]; Suarez with 13 goals[7 League, 4 UEFA Champions League, 2 Copa Del Ray] and Neymar with 26 goals[17 League, 3 UEFA Champions League, 6 Copa Del Ray]. In total the trio has 81 goals so far with the season still open to extend and build on that lead from BBC.

The upcoming El Clasico which is going to be held at Barcelona’s home THE NOU CAMP will dedice the winner of the LA LIGA as MSN go head to head with BBC. The 1st leg was held at the ESTADIO SANTIAGO BERNEBEAU which was a home game for Real Madrid as BBC dominated MSN and Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 3-1. The debate between BBC and MSN has just begun and who will be lasting long and strong in the record books only time will tell.

Swine Flu outbreak in India

The number of deaths across India due to swine flu reached 774 on Saturday, with 31 more people succumbing to the disease. States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, West Bengal witnessed a rise of swine flu cases and the figure of those infected with H1N1 virus stands at 12,963 till February 21, according to Union health ministry.

An eight-year-old boy died of swine flu on Friday while 11 fresh cases of H1N1 infection were detected in the last 24 hours. Most of these fresh cases are reported from Kolkata while two or three are from north 24 Parganas district.

The National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) confirmed 21 newswine flu cases in the city and its surroundings on Wednesday. The total number of H1N1 patients in the state has now gone up to 167 while the death toll so far is 8. This is perhaps the largest number of cases reported on a single day during this outbreak. The state health department, however, claimed otherwise.

Just when virologists were hoping for a natural weaning for the H1N1 virus due to the rising temperature, the mercury dipped again. The virus thrives in temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius. Virologists say the virus dissipates in temperatures between 32 and 34 degrees and dies when it crosses the 35-degree mark.

The H1N1 virus spreads through droplets expelled in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People are contagious from one day before to seven days after they develop symptoms which include fever, sore throat and coughing, diarrhoea, nausea.

Infection can be prevented from staying away from infected persons and observing personal hygiene. Washing hands frequently, covering nose and mouth while coughing and sneezing helps to an extent.
Pharmacy majors assured the Centre that there will be no swine flu drug and vaccine shortages as they have the raw material and capacity to ramp up production, if the need arises. The Centre has already purchased 1 lakh capsules of oseltamivir from Hetero Drugs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the health officials to ensure necessary treatment and adequate medicines for the disease while affected states have been offered central assistance as the death toll reached 743. Health authorities have also launched campaign over television and radio to tell people about precautions they should take to avoid the flu.

The West Bengal Government decided to open more swine flu testing centres in Kolkata at the city’s School of Tropical Medicine and the North Bengal Medical College in Darjeeling district.

2 States : The story of my marriage by Chetan Bhagat

2 States: The Story Of My Marriage, commonly known as 2 States, is a novel written by Chetan Bhagat. It focuses on the love story of a couple coming from two different states in India, who face hardships in convincing their parents to approve their marriage. The novel is said to be inspired from the real life story of the author and his wife Anusha Suryanarayanan who are from Delhi and Tamil Nadu respectively.

The story begins from IIM Ahmedabad, where Krish, a Punjabi boy from Delhi meets a beautiful girl, Ananya, from Chennai. They became friends over a rasgulla within a few days and decide to study together every night. But with time, they fall in love and get romantically involved. Chetan Bhagat successfully pictures the premarital relationship of a boy and a girl. Their emotions and feelings, when in love, are wonderfully captured in words.

They get jobs and seriously plan to get married. But the community difference becomes their greatest hurdle in their path of being together. Both their parents didn’t approve their plan. So, at first Krish tries to impress Ananya’s parents by giving her brother tuitions and by helping her father with PowerPoint presentation. Then they try to convince Krish’s mother.

Krish’s family didn’t like their proposal but Ananya manages to win them over by solving a family problem in Krish’s cousin’s wedding. Now they both try to introduce each other’s parents. But things don’t work out well in between them and their dream to get married comes to an end. But, at last, Krish’s father, who was like an enemy to Krish, helps them to fulfil their dream of being one by convincing Ananya’s family. They both really do very hard to make it happen and finally make it.

The story runs on a typical Bollywood background and was soon followed by a movie. Boy meets girl, their friendship begins and gradually turns into love. But that is followed by marriage. And there lies the complication.

Arjun kapoor does well as a boy struggling in the tug-of-war between his love and parents and portrays his pain through his acting but falls short in scenes opposite to his father, Ronit Roy. Alia Bhatt looks beautiful and sensitive Ananya in every bit but falls weak in few scenes. Amrita Singh and Ronit Roy’s acting as Krish’s parents touches our heart.

Ronit Roy is outstanding in his part whereas Amrita Singh brings out the feelings of a stubborn mother. Revathi, as Ananya’s mother, proves herself as a successful actress yet again.

Overall, the movie is worth watching with good music. It has collected 38.06 crore on its opening weekend. Director Abhishek Verman leaves a mark by portraying the forever difference in mentalities when it comes to marriage of two people coming from two different community. The film can be a good way for parents understanding their children and is enjoyable.

Rail Budget 2015 : Long run improvement and safety

The rail budget 2015 was a new form of budget where improvement in service quality has been focus and safety security has been focus. The Budget of this time has mainly focus on upgradation of rail system.
The main highlight of the budget were

·        Introduction on online book of food parcel
·        Introduction of wifi service over 180 station
·        No hike in fair
·        For security purpose people boarding long distance train will be recorded
·        Foreign collaboration in some case for benefit of people
·        Increasing speed in four corridors from 110-130 t0 160-200
·        Improvement of rail track on these corridors
·        Cc cam on local train
·        Complete of all metro project in every city quickly
·        Increase & decrease of coach in train according to need
·        No new train has been announced
·        Clean & hygiene in station premises and train & toilet
·        Pp model in various case has been highlighted

So if see the budget clearly it is like giving idea of what the rail has planned in coming in 3-2 years, and budget itself, moreover the primary  focus is to show what the modi government has on mind for rail in coming year.

Step like
e- service for food and 4 month before booking of ticket, toll free no within coming month but the project like running train at 200 km from 110 km is like dreaming of modi government in dream like Mamta banarjee when she was a rail minister moreover the budget this time has not focus on problem of daily local train passenger no train has been increased which is problem during office hours  but emphasize is on improvement on toilet in long distance train all show emphasize on better service and timely service to long distance train sms service to passenger about, train details all show that importance has given to long distance train not to  local train but safety for woman has been consider in local train these  budget the cleaniness in station and making rail aa icon has been taken into account. But security of unreserved people getting in  reserved compartment is a big issue

At the end i want to say we have to wait and see how much modi government achieved the idea  & plan he has propose.
