Far from the madding crowd:offbeat destinations

With the popular tourist destinations getting over-crowded, more and more people are turning towards offbeat places to enjoy a relaxing vacation nowadays. People finding a recluse out of the din and bustle of Kolkata have now opted for lesser known places in and around their state. This article will list down some of these calm and mesmerising places which are just a few among all such amazing places. These places also provide ample inspirations for photographers as these are close to nature and some are also of historic origin.
We start with Chandraketugarh  which  is a long lost ancient city unearthed by excavation. Situated on the banks of Bidyadhari river in South 24 Parganas, it is just 50kms away from Kolkata. According to the Archeological Survey of India, the relics excavated date back as early as that before the Maurya dynasty.  Relics include Buddha stupas and images, coins of Jataka stories, decorative designs of the Pala period and such other things.

Then there is Taki which is an instance of mystical beauty of rural Bengal.  It is located in Hasnabad which is 80kms from Kolkata. The river Ichamati rinses  past and provides a scintillating experience for the tourists who come here to enjoy  the serenity of rustic Bengal.  The main attraction is a Bagan Bari which houses many small resorts.
Samsing, a landscape coloured with orange and green , is an untouched rural corner of Darjeeling district.  It is located at a distance of 82kms from Siliguri. Exempted from the harmful effects of commercialisation, the main attractions of this place are lush green tea gardens and dense forests inhabited by indigenous animals and birds. Also the Neora Valley National Park is located within a distance of 18kms.

Mukul losing trust of Mamata

Last couple of months it is seen that former AITC (All India Trinomool Congress) general secretary Mukul Roy has lost trust of Trinomool supremo Mamata Banerjee and a distance can be seen between Mukul Roy and Trinomool.
On 12th January Mukul Roy was called to appear before CBI (Central Bauru Of Investigation) regarding Saradha scam but Roy was in Delhi and he informed CBI that he would meet after returning to Kolkata. On 14th January he returned from Delhi and sought for 15 days extension to appear before the agency, saying he would be pre occupied with the by-election in two seats in the state.
He left for Delhi again on 15th January. Finally he appeared before CBI on 30th January and was questioned for over 5 hours in connection with the saradha scam and after coming out he said that he will help CBI in the investigation this statement contradicts with the statement given by Trinomool supremo Mamata Banerjee and this led to distance between Mukul Roy and Mamata Banerjee.
As a result Mamata Banerjee appoints Subrata Bakshi as the general secretary of AITC along with Mukul Roy.
On 28th February he was removed as the leader of the party in Rajya Sabha and as the chief of the Parliamentary affairs of the party though no statement or reaction came from Mukul Roy though he avoided the meetings that held in kalighat to give indication to Trinomool supremo. Now the Trinomool Congress is divided into two paths one is the supremo Mamata Banerjee and the other one is  Mukul Roy.
Political thinkers think that in order to promote Abhishek Banerjee as the next leader of Trinomool Congress the supremo Mamata Banerjee is cutting the power of Mukul Roy and the conflict between both them has reached to that level that the meeting that was held regarding corporation election Mukul Roy and his son Subhrangsu Roy was not called, even few months back it was impossible to think. Mukul Roy also differed from his supremo regarding the issue who will give back the money to the investors and all who has lost all the money in saradha.
Few months back Mamata Banerjee said that as CBI is investigating the matter so it is their duty to give back the money to the investors but Mukul Roy contradict and said that CBI is only in charge of the investigation not in charge of giving back the money it is someone’s else duty and he also said that the whip that has bought by CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechuri against BJP and all the oppositions voted for that, TMC shouldn’t vote along with CPI(M) . It is told that Mukul Roy will join BJP in few months, the time will tell about that though it is evident that Trinomool is divided into two groups Mamata Banerjee and the other one is Mukul Roy.

#HOKKOLOROB: A global protest

The hok kolorob Movement is a series of protests by the student of Jadavpur University in Kolkata, that began on September 3, 2014. The term “Hok Kolorob” literally means “let there be cacophony” was originally a song by Bangladeshi singer Arnob and it began to be used as hashtag on Facebook. This movement was the result of laxity in the investigation of an alleged case of molestation on campus and police brutality on unarmed students taking part in a non-violent sit in demonstration.

The goals of the movement was an unbiased, transparent, fast investigation of the allegation with appropriate legal committee according to vishakha guidelines, and resignation of the vice chancellor.

The  methods of movement were Demonstrations, internet activism, hashtag activism. On 16th September 2014, a peaceful demonstration by students took place in front of the administrative building of the University, demanding an investigation into the molestation of a female student in campus.
Following several unsuccessful attempts at dialogue with the authorities, the student’s gheraoed some personnel of the university authority including the vice-chancellor, Abhijit Chakraborty, as a result The Vice-Chancellor called the police. The subsequent police brutality unleashed upon the students in the early hours of September 17th, 40 students were injured and 37 students were arrested.
Criticism of the police brutality included that police used baton charge on a peaceful demonstration, that female were manhandled and molested by male police officers, and several men not in uniform attacked the students. The student insists that they were Trinamool Congress cadres.
The official position of the Kolkata Police was that “minimum lawful force” applied to escort the Vice-Chancellor and other members of the committee out of the university. Demonstrations showing solidarity with the students started in Kolkata and across India including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.
In Delhi the protest movement was organized by the students of JNU and in Bangalore the protest movement was organized by the students from various colleges and universities in town hall which includes the students from Kolkata and the ex students of Jadavpur itself, also the ex students of jadavpur who were at different parts of the world also protested in their own way through social media against this police brutality over the students, even in 20 cities in abroad  the students organized protest movement regarding this jadavpur issue and that turn this protest into a “global protest”.
A big rally happened on 20th September from Nandan to Rajbhaban, over 1 lack students from various colleges of the city, many eminent personalities like Anjan Dutta, Swastika Mukherjee, Sumon Mukhopadhay participated in the rally, at the end of the rally 5 student representative met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi.
The protest have been marked with a strong cultural flavor, students have been singing and arranging diverse cultural manifestation throughout the days of protest it includes posters, graffiti, street plays and performances dotting the university campus and street of Kolkata.
During the puja the students carry forward their protest movement in front of Maddox square. During the convocation of Jadavpur University the students refused to take their degree certificate as their demand of resignation of the Vice-Chancellor was not fulfilled.
Getasree Sarkar (first class first) student of jadavpur refused to take her degree from the governor, in this way they continued their peaceful protest. After that some of the students participated in hunger strike protest, one of the student was hospitalized and it was the final hit in the coffin as a result of this on 12th January the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee declares at JU that the Vice-Chancellor Mr. Abhijit Chakraborty is resigning from his post. This led to the victory of independent student protest that was happening in JU and also in many cities in India and across the world from past 5 months.

Football: More than just a game

Twenty two players, ninety minutes, two managers and the roar of a billion fans worldwide. Football is more than just two teams contesting for three points or a cup. Football is more than just the on-field drama. Football is a lifestyle.
For the ardent supporter of the game, a match is not of the stipulated ninety minutes. A match lasts forever. Be it in discussions, arguments, videos or the analysis of a match. Maradona’s ‘hand of god’ to Zidane’s ‘head butt’, each and every incident lasts forever. What make the sport immortal are the fans. Fan forums to pubs to coffee shops and restaurants it is the fans that keep football alive everywhere.
Football is nothing without fans. –Jock Stein (Celtic football club manager 1965-78)
A well-known tradition that is followed by major football clubs is the trophy tour. This usually happens after a club has won the league and they showcase their trophy atop a bus as they tour the entire city. This is also a thanksgiving to the fans for their loyal support through the ups and down of the club. In an intense match, the fans can raise their team’s morale by cheering every pass, every shot on goal and that lifts spirits.
Talking of out of field aspects of the game, a well known social cause that every football club and every supporter participates in is the fight against racism. Racism in the 21st century is still an alarming issue and people associated with football make it a point in reminding everyone about the ill of racism in every match where banners and hoardings against racism are highlighted.
Football against racism in Europe is one such network that is put up to counter racism in European football. Clubs also make a point in helping the unprivileged children, the patients suffering from life threatening diseases and local charities as well.
Prominent football personalities are signed by the United Nations as their ambassadors as they help in preaching the universal language of respect. David Beckham and Lionel Messi are examples of superstars who have represented the UNICEF. They travel to different countries and conduct football training camps for children who cannot afford to join an academy but are united by their passion and love for the sport and most importantly their will to not let go of their dreams.
Football has always been a story of heroes. Rising above poverty, illiteracy and unemployment, football has given us stars that shine so bright that their light is reflected by anyone having a heart. Alexis Sanchez, Neymar Jr, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo are few examples of superstars who has risen above every odd and are now the national treasure of their respective countries. Football teaches us to love, respect, dream and to never let go of that dream. It teaches us to believe. It teaches us to never give up. Football, truly more than just a game.

ISL: How it has revolutionized Indian football

Indian super league or better known as Hero Indian super league is one of the professional football leagues in India that was contested by 8 teams in its inaugural version. After the success of IPL, similar format has been followed to commercialize other sports namely, hockey, kabbadi and football. As a market in sports a country of 1.25 billion provides enormous potential but it was as we know a ‘dormant’ scenario with neither the Indian national football team nor the leagues providing a base for the sport to boom. India is predominantly a cricket loving country with huge viewership across the nation. So the question for the ages was how to awaken the footballing spirit this country possesses? The answer to the scenario was quite simple. Commercialize it!
On December 9th 2010, All India Football Federation signed a 700-crore deal with Reliance Industries and the International Management group of the United States and thus started the dormant volcano to rise from its sleep. Fast forward to 20th December 2014 and India witnessed a mammoth sporting event come to conclusion bested only by the ratings of its godfather the IPL.
International football stars were brought in as ‘marquee’ players for the franchise teams and starred in every other commercial for the brand as a whole. The icing on the cake was when Del Piero, a FIFA world cup winner with Italy donned a Hindi accent and exclaimed “Ye diwali football wali”.
Frankly why would a football crazy country not love their idols play for their respective state teams. It was heart-warming as a football lover to witness the country come together and enjoy the sport. Talking on footballing terms, the beautiful game has been accessorised to be more ‘beautiful’ with the quality of pitches across Europe and the Americas. Although nowhere near the international level, the pitch condition of the Indian stadiums has improved drastically because of ISL.
The management has welcomed constructive ideas for the betterment of Indian football across all dimensions, from the coaching staff to the physio team to the guards.
Major European clubs has now recognised India as a potential market evident from the fact that clubs are setting up youth camps in our country. Manchester City Fc, a major British football club has set up a camp in Kolkata. Atletico Madrid, a Spanish club that plays in first division Spanish league has partnered up with the Kolkata ISL franchise and thus the name Atletico De Kolkata. They have promised to provide the Kolkata franchise with coaching techniques.

As the saying goes, everything has a beginning, and certainly ISL has elevated India to the footballing world with bringing in proven world class talents and marketing the sport to the common household who might not have had that level of excitement for the sport prior to the tournament.

‘Ban’-The new word that upholds the dignity of our nation!

‘Ban’-the newly developed trend that has suddenly come to surface, courtesy-Our very own sweet Indian Government.Well, atleast the Government is fighting for bovine freedom, emancipation of women, fair justice to victims, and punishment to murderers and rapists , ain’t they?!
Anyway that can come later. In last month the authorities have banned from documentaries to sumptuous beef. Banning of beef in Maharashtra, the reason “gaaibhagwanhain” at least the cows saved their lives, all gratitude to our Indian Government. Why Cow should have all the fun? Err..Shouldn’t the first food to be banned by the BJP Government be lotus stems?! (someone tweeted this ,I just came across, funny right?).
But then who am I to decide, I am just a citizen of the largest democracy of India, a country whose government is ‘for the people, by the people, of the people’.
The other day while watching one of my favourite sitcoms in one of the English channel I was very content and overjoyed on seeing the simple word ‘naked’ been muted. Bravo !we were prevented from knowing a word that would scar our lives forever, hearing that very word would bring us doom. Hence I call such things as ‘divine muting’ this will lead us to heaven after our death, ‘our stairway to heaven’.
How can we forget about the ban of love? Yes I am talking about the Article 377,that penalises homosexual activities, as that is unnatural and violation to rules laid down by our religion. To the authorities, “You all PhDs in Hinduism, did you people hear about the “trityaPrakriti” ? Hindu mythology has ample examples of deities changing genders at different times or combining to form androgynous or hermaphroditic beings, a great example of homosexuality in Hindu scriptures can be seen when Lord Vishnu takes the form of the enchantress Mohini, inorder to trick the demons into giving up the “amrita”.
Later Lord Shiva gets attracted to Mohini and they have a relationship that results in the birth of a son.” So there my friends is a glorious example of a man changing his sex a.k.a transgender, then having a relationship with another man a.k.ahomosexuality.So dig deep Government before making any statement.
‘Right to information’ a façade that had been once included in the constitution of India is too at stake at the hands of our democratic Government. The BBC documentary on Nirbhaya was banned for television telecast as that would agitate people. Such heinous crimes are being backed up by lawyers and their statements on rape makes me put a trigger inside my mouth and shoot myself inside out. Rather than giving fair justice to India’s daughter our vegetable Government chose to ban stuff cause they are peace lovers, social agitations for good cause or justice is itself a crime.
A very big crime !
Irony of the situation ,when you can piss in public but dare not kiss, my friends ! Once again this harms and violates the tradition and culture of our country.if only the guardians of Indian culture could stop the mass from breeding like rabbits in their houses, tell them about contraceptions.Butwait, sex education? Isn’t that banned too??
Bollywood why shall you be spared?! NO !use of curse words in bollywood banned too.No more giggles and fun dialogues cause that detoriates the dignity of our nation. String of curse words big NO NO ! Our Government want us to be as holy as “Gangajal”.
All these gets me thinking lately what else could be banned?! May be eating, talking...uhh..How about breathing??

Another disappointing Oscars!

The Academy awards disappoint me almost every year, few exceptions though. I hardly can recollect an entire Academy Award ceremony that made me feel happy and content. It is always a mixed bag for me. After 2012s disappointment I personally thought of letting go this award ceremony, but 2013 was promising hence I decided to give it a hopeful shot again this year. With all those great movies lined up for the best picture I was totally rooting for Boyhood by Richard Linklater.I am an ardent movie fanatic I watch almost every movie that I could all through the year ,naturally it covers the Oscar nomination lists.
Neil Patrick Harris’ flashy splashy Academy Awards’ opening number-a musical salute to the fact that moving pictures are so much more than mere moving pictures and Jack Black joining him in the stage ranting all what is wrong in Hollywood today. The audience reciprocated with zeal and warmth, and so did I sitting on the other side of the television. As the ceremony continued though Boyhood was a forerunner but soonBirdman, a movie by Alejandro G.Inarritu bagged some 3 awards, best original screen play, best cinematography and best director. I was anxiously waiting for the Best picture category! AndBAMM !disappointment! Hollywood yet again couldn’t recognise a masterpiece Like Boyhood! Academy blew it again this time! This hurts! Birdman won the Best picture award.
I came across Dan Kois article and he called this ‘epochal travesty’. Over the years we have seen disasters in the Best Picture award just like this year. Like when Citizen Kane lost in 1941, The Graduate lost in 1967. Cries and Whispers, High Noon, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Apocalypse Now, Raging Bull, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. all somehow lost Best Picture. We have seen how Argo won the Best Picture award in 2012 whereas the nomination list had better deserving pictures. Academy somehow loves to marinate the Best picture award in mediocrity, thus mediocre movies like ‘King’s Speech’ gets the Best picture award whereas movies like The Social network and ‘The Black Swan’ , ‘The Kids Are All Right’ goes unnoticed. Striking the wrong chord or not so melodious chord is not something new with the Academy.
Boyhood, a true masterpiece movie for ages.Linklater created history making this movie; he framed the elements and mediums of relationships with time with excellent storytelling. He brought on surface the basic regular post modern lives we live in. The substance of this movie is so profound that the audience can relate to it. This kind of movie is a massive breakthrough in Hollywood, today.Linklater is one of my favourite directors and his each and every work is universal and epitome of formative experience. There was no reason why this movie did not get the Best Picture Award. It is a tragedy that Academy fails to recognise massive and magnificent filmmaking.
Birdman on the other hand was not a bad movie it was quite adventurous with amazing camera work. The dark comedy the elements of surrealism were indeed something great. Somehow Academy digs movie with neurotic psychotic outbreak of an individual. But Academy should somehow get rid of its so called narrative and start recognising proper out of the box filmmaking.
