Kolkata Kali Puja festival is another important occasion that takes place two weeks after the celebration of Laxmi puja. It was first introduced in Bengal in 18th century, by king (raja)Krishnachandra of Navadvipa.

Goddess Kali with the belief that she will protect me from evils. Also, she symbolizes strength.

Puja of Maa Kali is conducted at midnight on the day of the new moon in the month of Kartik. Kali Puja of Kolkata India usually coincides with Diwali.

It is celebrated with splendid grandeur. I light candles, burst crackers, dress up in good clothes and offer prayers to mother Goddess Kali.

Shakti is present inside one self in the microcosmic level. When aroused, this energy reaches the Supreme Energy. Thus both the energy merges with each other.

This indivisible energy is The Goddess. Thus Kali Puja is performed to invoke the flow of energy and awaken the spirit within. This can be done by Tantric or Vedic rituals.

Awakening of the spirit is required not only for spiritual gains but also for the well being.

This festival has a unique way of celebration with fire crackers and sweets. Kali puja along with Durga puja is celebrated in a grand way in Kolkata of West Bengal.

It is celebrated in homes and public pandals with clay, idols of maa kali. Maa is prescribed, offering of red hibiscus flowers, animals blood in a skull, sweet, rice and lentils, fish and meat.

Kali puja celebrations also know as Dipanwita Kali Puja. Two other major kali puja observations are Ratanti Kali puja and Phalaharini Kali Puja and is celebrated on the new moon days of the Hindu month of Margashirsha and jyesta respectively.

Honor the goddess who is another form of Maa Durga.

Kolkata is one of the most richly cultured cities of India. Be it music, theatre, art, drama, literature, folk art, and the list goes on….

Therefore, on this month the whole of Bengal comes down to celebrate the festival of light together. Sweets and pleasantries are exchange among families and the entire city is exquisitely decorated with light, lamps and colors of happiness and prosperity.

I visit many pandals with clay idols of maa kali. It is also celebrated in homes.

Reports say that this year there were more than 2,00,000 lakh Community Pujas here itself in Kolkata. I don’t have the statistics regarding the scenario for whole of West Bengal, neither for Kolkata-outskirts like Barasat, etc.

And despite Courts’ order for no to go for sound-producing crackers, we could hear some the announcements made by crackers themselves – that they were in consort!
