The truth of the city of joy is; there is no joy in half of the breathing bodies. Every moment when we are busy in spinning the yarn of our lives, a mother is struggling to feed her baby, a girl is fighting for her survival and a child is willing to smile somewhere around us.
Usually we see orphan or street children fighting with their hunger and helpless women on roads and make ourselves feel sad for just a while but forget the scenario immediately and most of us don’t do anything for helping them.
CINI( Child in need institute); a leading NGO of Kolkata is trying to glow the infinite bulbs of hope in their lives and working for their smiles, since 1974 with the motto- help the mother, help the child.
The journey of CINI is to provide shelter home for girls and women who are saved from antitrafficking , to educate and protect their children, for treatment and prevention of malnutrition and to stop different kinds of abuse on women.
It began its journey from two clinics for deprived children in Kolkata has over the years, emerged into a national NGO with an outreach of 5 million people across the country. It works in four sectors- health, nutrition, education and protection of women, children and vulnerable groups. While its approach was directed towards specific sectors prior to the strategic planning of 2005, the new approach is integrated and rights focused, based on the acknowledgement that the only sustainable way to address poverty and inequality is through community based partnerships.
The formation of CINI is the result of successful dream of pediatrician Dr. samir chaudhari.
With the collaborated try of it’s 1300 employees CINI is now involved in several community development focused projects, also driving at the underlying social causes of poverty.
The great and pure image of CINI has built through growing from humble roots.
To improve its work CINI had conducted door to door visits with the local village community worker to ensure that there were “no home deliveries” and that the mother and child had been sensitized about the child care and inter connected issues on appropriate feeding practices and reproductive and child health issues. The target had not been only the mother but the whole community of caregivers which also included close relatives and grandparents.
There are 4 key areas CINI works majorly in –
1. Malnutrition
2. Maternal health
3. HIV/AIDS prevention
4. Education for all.
CINI’S projects in the area of education for all and AIDS prevention come under CINI Asha and CINI Bandhan. The urban wing of CINI was launched in 1989 to bring a development in the lives of deprived urban children. CINI Bandhan is working to create awareness about HIV and to ensure better quality of life for HIV infected women and children.
Continuing to keep its commitment to the ‘child in need’ intact, CINI following its strategic review, decided to embrace more integrated approaches to the issue of child hunger.
CINI runs a programme to build Child and Women Friendly communities in Diamond Harbour Block II specially targeted to fight malnutrition and promote Early Childhood Development covered a population of 10,000 while another 20,000 population were targeted under the integrated lifecycle strategy.
By visiting the working areas of CINI one can easily come to know what changes has come there in the past years.
Now the residents of those places are aware of the basic nutrition needs for their children. They know about their rights and government policies that are for the welfare of them. They understand the need of education and sending their children to schools.
Thus thousands of lives are trying to smile and living happily by holding the hands of CINI.
