Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth, prosperity, health, love and peace. Lakshmi puja is observed on Kojagiri Purnima, the Full moon day which falls after Durga Pooja in the month of Ashwin (September – October). As maintained by Hindu scriptures and beliefs, the favorite day for Goddess Lakshmi is Poornima.
Lakshmi puja is mainly observed in Eastern Indian states namely Bengal, Orissa and Assam. It is also observed in Budelkhand and some parts of Bihar, especially Darbhanga region.
The idol is adorned with red colored sari and ornaments. She holds a pot full of gold in her left hand and rice crop in her right hand. A sixteen-step puja is performed to Goddess Lakshmi followed by whole day fast. A beautiful tradition in this occasion is of drawing Alpana or patterns referring to Goddess Lakshmi’s feet as well as different auspicious symbols.
Devotees believe that on that special full moon day, Goddess visits their houses and blesses them. Married women of the family stay awake till dawn waiting for the Goddess to arrive. A diya or oiled lamp must remain lit throughout that night. Also, there is a funny tradition, youngsters stealing turmeric and ginger plants, fruits and flower during that night by the youngsters, may be because that is the brightest night of the year.
